I understand completely the situation you talk about. I have small children too and it is always necessary to plan everything upfront, especially if you travel to an island that is small like Vis. Beaches that I found very comfortable are all sandy beaches mostly because those doesn't make me be too cautious with kids when they are out of water, exploring around, playing or searching seashells. Zaglav sandy beach is perhaps the most secluded among beaches I would recommend. It is reachable only on foot or boat. The path of some 500m-600m starts from Milna cove where you can get with car (15min. drive from Vis town). There is a parking place. On Zaglav sandy beach there is a small bar that offers soft drinks, local wine and beer. It has a very shallow water getting less than waist high up to 40m out. However, on that beach there is no natural shadow, meaning that you need to take with you sun umbrella. Other beach is Milna sandy beach, less spectacular than Zaglav beach but very easy to reach with car. So you can have you personal belongings in the car, within the reach of hand. Milna beach does not have bars or restaurants nearby, so get there well prepared. Milna is very shallow as well as Zaglav and children feels very comfortable playing on that beach. Outside of water this beach is a quite narrow and smaller than Zaglav. Other nice beach is Stoncica sandy beach, very shallow, with nice sandy bottom and with restaurant situated on the same beach. Stoncica is reachable only on foot or boat. When coming from Vis town there is a parking place about 200m from the beach from where starts a narrow path in direction to the beach.
Hope this will help to you and other parents visiting Vis.
Hello, I'd like to add my two cents. Don't underestimate city beaches in Vis town and Komiza if you plan a long day on the beach with children. In Vis town there is a lovely pebble beach, right on the east side of Prirovo peninsula (a small peninsula with monastery in the middle of Vis port). There you'll find a small children's playground, grocery shop with vegetables and soft drinks and in the nearby bar and hotel kind stuff will let you to use bathroom. In Komiza we liked wery much Gusarica beach (pictures on foursquare: http://4sq.com/pAF4AJ). It has access for the disabled, changing rooms, toilets, cafe and restaurant, showers. This beach is only 5 min. walking distance from Komiza downtown.
